When the Modern Church no longer acknowledges repentance, kneeling is the first to go. In the Coptic Orthodox Church, kneeling (and full prostration, or metanoia) is a profound physical expression of humility, repentance, and submission to God. By bowing the body, believers acknowledge their unworthiness and submit their human strength to the majesty of Yahweh the Creator. St. Basil the Great and other Church Fathers described kneeling as a living icon of our spiritual state. Bending to the ground represents our fall into sin, while standing back up symbolizes our deliverance, salvation, and restoration to grace by Christ.
