It was, like the phony fall of communism, a master stroke of deception meant to pave the way for oligarch Petro Poroshenko to get elected—a phony Ukrainian "nationalist" who would go on to provoke Putin into his stealth invasion of 2014. It wouldn't have made sense for a communist president to provoke Putin, so the communists engendered this fake coup so a false nationalist could replace him and provoke Putin into the first step of the invasion.
